US SM-3 interceptor fails to hit target in test

WASHINGTON: An advanced Standard Missile-3 ballistic interceptor failed to hit its target in its first test launch conducted over the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii, the US Defense Department said.
The SM-3 Block 1B interceptor missile was launched yesterday from a US Navy vessel about 90 seconds after the firing of a short-range ballistic missile target, but the target was not intercepted, the US Missile Defense Agency, a unit of the Pentagon, said.
The agency will conduct "an extensive investigation to determine the cause of the failure to intercept," it said in a statement.

The BrahMos Supersonic cruise missile will be inducted into the Air Force in 2012, a top Defence Research and Development Organisation official said.

The missile has already been inducted into the army and navy, BrahMos Aerospace Managing Director and Chief Controller, DRDO, A Sivathanu Pillai, told reporters at Chunkankadai, near here.

The BrahMos missile, a joint venture of India and Russia, is the first such in the world, he claimed.

India’s ministry of defense is seeking information from vendors across the globe about the purchase of a new  long-range missile featuring a light warhead. 

According to the ministry’s request for information (RFI), the missile system will be fired from Indian Air Force (IAF) fighters.

“After successful integration, series modification is to be carried out,” the RFI says. “The missile should be light in weight, having a long range with reattack capability.”
