US improving extended-range 105 mm artillery round

 

The US Army is in the process of releasing an improved 105 mm artillery round that would cut down the number of projectiles and charges needed for M119 towed howitzer operations and increase lethality against light to medium targets.

The effort is intended in part to reduce the logistics burden of the army's 105 mm howitzer units with the type of light forces that operate in Afghanistan's mountainous terrain specifically in mind.

New Rapid Intervention Vehicle

 

IsraelDefense has learned that the new Rapid Intervention Vehicle, a patrol version of the "Storm 3" jeep, developed by Automotive Industries Ltd. (AIL), has recently entered into operational use.

U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps leaders trimmed a lot of extras to cut the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) cost by $100,000. This also will slice 16 months from the $52 million engineering, manufacturing and development phase, which will end in May 2012. That means the $270,000 base vehicle will come cheaper and sooner, as a single contract award is now scheduled for 2015. 

Malaysia Will Use Norwegian Surveillance System on Vehicles

The Malaysian Army will fit a Norwegian-developed surveillance system to a number of the AV8 armored vehicles it is procuring from Turkish company FNSS.

Rheinmetall Nordic said in a statement released Oct. 20 that its Vingtaqs II long-range surveillance and reconnaissance system had been selected in a deal worth about 36 million euros ($49.6 million).

Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) Has Launched In Asia By US Navy

 

The first Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) was launched into Mobile Bay, Ala., on Sept. 12, and the U.S. Navy and Army, along with shipbuilder Austal USA, are preparing for the ship's Sept. 17 christening ceremony.

The Spearhead was moved from its building shed into a floating drydock, then towed into deeper water for the dock to be submerged and the ship floated off. The new ship was then towed by tugs back to the shipyard in downtown Mobile for final fitting out. 

Special Sensor Has Designed for Small Military Vessels

Kelvin Hughes, a British radar maker, presented a solid-state sensor designed for rigid inflatable boats and other small craft suitable for use by special forces in covert missions, a company executive said.

The small-craft variant radar is equipped with a 26-inch radome and a ruggedized display, and uses I band radar technology, Jonathan Field, director of security sensors and systems at Kelvin Hughes Surveillance, told journalists at the Defense & Security Equipment International show, which opened Sept. 13.

BRDM-2 upgrade offers improved protection, performance

 

Russia's Arzamas Machinery Plant has developed an upgrade package to extend the operational life of the ageing 4x4 BRDM-2 amphibious armoured car.

The upgraded vehicle is designated as BRDM-2A and has a slightly increased combat weight of 7,650 kg compared with the 7,500 kg of the original. This is due to additional armour that provides extra protection against small-arms fire and shell splinters.
