China will make 30 submarines by 2020

 

The Chinese Navy is expected to procure 30 more submarines by 2020 and bring the total from the current 62 to 100 by 2030, Hong Kong's Ming Pao daily reported on Tuesday.

According to the paper, the U.S. has 75 subs, 26 of them deployed in the Asia-Pacific region. China is building up its Navy, including retrofitting its first aircraft carrier.

South Korea's DSME is dealing with Indonesia over Type 209 submarines

 

South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has announced that it is in discussions with the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD) over the potential export of its licensed-produced Type 209 diesel-electric submarine.

Navy's newest Astute Class submarine named

 

HMS Anson is the fifth in her class, and is being named after Admiral of the Fleet George Anson (1697-1762) who is noted for his circumnavigation of the globe and his role overseeing the Royal Navy during the Seven Years' War.
The Secretary of State for Defence, Dr Liam Fox, said:

"I am pleased to announce that Astute Class Submarine Hull 5 is to be named HMS Anson. She will join HMS Astute, HMS Ambush, HMS Artful and HMS Audacious."
