South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has announced that it is in discussions with the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD) over the potential export of its licensed-produced Type 209 diesel-electric submarine.
A statement from DSME on the Korea Exchange on 10 October said that the potential contract is valued at KRW1.2 trillion (USD1
billion) and covers the sale of three Type 209 submarines to Indonesia. DSME added that it expects to reach a definitive agreement with the MoD in November. South Korea's Ministry of National Defense is also involved in the talks.
An official from the Indonesian MoD's procurement division confirmed to Jane's on 11 October that negotiations with South Korea had commenced, although he stressed that no decisions had been reached over the acquisition. Despite indications from DSME that it had achieved preferred-supplier status with the Indonesian government, the official suggested that talks with other vendors were ongoing.
