Russia's Arzamas Machinery Plant has developed an upgrade package to extend the operational life of the ageing 4x4 BRDM-2 amphibious armoured car.

The upgraded vehicle is designated as BRDM-2A and has a slightly increased combat weight of 7,650 kg compared with the 7,500 kg of the original. This is due to additional armour that provides extra protection against small-arms fire and shell splinters.

An improvement in performance is brought through the replacement of the GAZ-41 V-8 petrol engine with the GAZ-562 diesel developing 175 hp or the D-2459 diesel developing 136 hp. This increases maximum road speed from 100 km/h to 110 km/h and operating range from 750 km to about 800 km.http://www.warwheels.net/images/brdm2_9P148_Nicholson1.jpg

As originally fielded the only access for the four-person crew was via small roof hatches above the commander and driver positions at the front of the vehicle. This made rapid exit under battle conditions difficult as the crew would be exposed to small-arms fire.
